How to Make Friends in a New City

friends friends

As thrilling and fun as it may be to move into a new city and get to enjoy the sights- it can be an incredibly lonely experience.

Even if you're moving with other people, you may find yourself feeling isolated or bored.  That doesn't have to be the case!  Cities are full of hundreds of thousands of other people like you, who will like you, and you shouldn't be afraid to put yourself out there.  Still, the question many people ask is more complicated.  How do you make friends when surrounded by this many people?

Classic Approaches

There are a couple of approaches to making friends that anyone could try.  When you're looking at Memphis houses for sale, you should also look for clubs and groups for like-minded people.  Whether you find a single mingle night at a bar or join a baseball team for your neighborhood, there are options to suit almost anyone's tastes.

Another classic approach is to go to areas you'd want to be anyway.  Whether this is volunteering at an animal shelter, or hanging out in bookstores or coffee shops, if you're somewhere that you'd be anyways- you may find someone who shares your interests.  This option is a giant leap, and yet is still one of the oldest and most tried choices.

Hobby Websites

There are hobby websites for everyone these days.  From people who love Christmas decor a little too much to those who are into creating their jewelry, and even for people who like hunting- you'll be able to find a group of people who share your interests.  These online groups often offer meet-ups in areas all over the world, and you may find people in your area who share your hobbies and interests.  This plan means you'll already have a shared topic to discuss, and there won't be a lot of pressure to hang out again if it's not too fun the first time.

Take Up Classes

What's the problem with wanting to learn?  Pick up a class from a local business, and join in with other people in your area.  You can choose from any interest you have, from cooking to painting, and learn with others.  Learning together helps form a bond, and before you know it, you may find people you want to hang out with outside of class.  On top of making friends, you'll also develop a new skill!

Do Some Gig Work

As strange as this option may sound, especially to those who don't need the extra money, taking up gig work is a fantastic way to make friends.  Whether you're answering ads for people needing artists on Craigslist or signing up for a driving app to find out what the hotspots in the city are, gig work is an incredible way to meet people.  Not only do you get the chance to meet as many people as possible, but you also have the benefit of having a purpose wherever you are.  This plan takes away some of the social anxiety from being in new areas.
